It was August 2006. For quite a while, I had been looking for something more in life. I had by this time already begun to make necessary changes in the way I lived my life. I had some knowledge of what the martial arts can do for you, but I also knew it took endless hours of dedication and training to gain these benefits. I would see a man often frequent my job (a regular customer). This man would come in, and at the time I knew him as Don. I knew he had a Taekwondo school and was highly skilled in this martial art. I was very unsure how to approach him. I finally approached him and started to ask questions about his class. To my surprise he was very open and ready to get me going. Still unsure of what I might be getting into, I asked when would be a good time to stop by. He told me that he would not be there but to come in on Thursday and who to speak to,(who at the time i knew as David Perra). Nervously I arrived on Thursday night. As I walked into the class I saw, (what has now become my favorite drill) students in a circle with paddles creating a rotating circle for kicking drills. I was instantly impressed. David Perra greeted me and explained a few things, I stayed and watched. I can honestly say I was still very nervous about joining. I got the privilage at the beginning of my training to work with David Perra. From the very beginning he was very patient. I saw him demonstrate techniques and I was speechless. The following week could not go by fast enough for me as I anticipated the next class. When I arrived in class I was still nervous. New people, new everything. As I saw the blackbelts lined up in front of the room at the end of that class, I had a different view on alot. I truly had nothing to be nervous about. All the students made me feel at home and the blackbelts as well. I remember looking at that row of blackbelts, I now had a whole new image of who I now know as Mr. Rouleau and Mr. Perra. There was one thing that all of these blackbelts shared, I couldn't figure it out at the time. I now know what they share, The Five Tenets and all of these blackbelts shined with it. I remember that night saying to myself that's the level I want my physical and mental state in. So far, since I began, I have already learned a new level of respect for people and myself. The way I once lived my life is now a distant memory of a lesson learned. I have gained abilities I never knew I had, and a better outlook on life. I can honestly say that being a part of this class has changed my life with amazing results and truly helped me become happier, healthier, and better at life all around. I also feel as though it has helped me in ways that I don't even know yet. I really don't know what I would do without Taekwondo now. I know it only gets better as I progress physically and as a person. Becoming a part of this class has truly been a wonderful experience and the best decision I have made in my life for myself. I have endless gratitude to my fellow students, and intructors, who keep me motivated and continue to help me achieve my goals in martial arts. Adam Murray |
